Leica has entered serious high-speed territory. The SL3-P might be the most underestimated professional camera of 2026.
Leica has always been associated with deliberate photography: manual focus, considered composition, and patience. The SL3-P tells a very different story.
Released in June 2026, the Leica SL3-P combines a 44MP back-illuminated full-frame sensor with a hybrid autofocus system and continuous shooting at up to 40 frames per second with autofocus support.
That's not a small improvement. It's an indication that Leica wants to compete more seriously for photographers shooting fast-moving subjects.

The 819-point autofocus system combines phase detection, contrast detection and depth-mapping technologies. On paper, this offers the speed and subject-recognition capabilities required for demanding sports, wildlife and event photography.
The real question is how consistently it performs in difficult lighting and with unpredictable movement. That requires extensive real-world testing rather than a specifications comparison.
The sleeper feature: Open Gate video
The SL3-P can record 8.1K video using the full 3:2 sensor area.
Why is that exciting?
Because a filmmaker can capture one scene and later create horizontal 16:9, vertical 9:16 and other compositions from the same footage, provided the subject was framed with those crops in mind.
For a photographer producing editorial images, brand campaigns and social content, this can be incredibly useful.
Add Apple ProRes recording up to 5.8K, L-Log and dedicated Leica Pure and Leica Cine LUTs, and the SL3-P starts looking like a serious hybrid production tool.
Our take
The SL3-P signals a shift in Leica's professional strategy. It is not trying to replace the M. It is offering a different kind of Leica experience: precision, colour science and premium construction combined with contemporary speed.
For photographers who love Leica lenses but need autofocus and sophisticated video, this may be the most compelling SL yet.
