Leica Meets Formula 1

Carbon fibre, racing-inspired controls and one of Leica's finest fixed lenses. This is more than a logo collaboration.

Leica's Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition is one of the most visually distinctive camera collaborations of 2026.

At its heart is the familiar Q3 43: a 60MP full-frame camera fitted with the superb APO-Summicron 43 f/2 ASPH.

But Leica has introduced a collection of motorsport-inspired materials that give this version a very different personality.

The camera features handcrafted carbon-fibre components, a black Microvelour body covering, Formula 1 branding, and red accents on selected controls.

Why the material choices are interesting

Carbon fibre is familiar from racing cars because of its strength-to-weight properties. On the Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition, it appears on the hand grip, thumb rest and soft-release button.

The Microvelour covering is intended to provide a tactile grip reminiscent of racing steering wheels.

It's a surprisingly thoughtful approach to a special edition. Rather than simply changing the paint colour, Leica has focused on surfaces photographers physically interact with.

The 43mm advantage

The Q3 43 is an intriguing choice for a Formula 1 collaboration.

Its 43mm lens offers a natural-looking perspective and extraordinary optical correction, but it isn't a long telephoto. It won't replace a 400mm lens for photographing cars on the far side of a circuit.

Instead, it is ideally suited to documenting the world around motorsport: mechanics preparing equipment, the atmosphere in the paddock, drivers' portraits, spectators, garages and intimate details.

This is a camera for the story of racing, not necessarily distant trackside action.

A special Leica Look

Leica has also introduced an exclusive Formula 1 Leica Look, designed to produce higher contrast and saturation. The rendering can be transferred through the Leica FOTOS app and applied to JPEG images.

It's another example of Leica treating the camera's digital colour signature as part of the overall product experience.

Our take

The Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition demonstrates how Leica can combine engineering, tactile design and cultural identity without changing the camera's core imaging hardware.

For a photographer who loves motorsport, the Q3 system and exceptional industrial design, it's a fascinating edition.
